About Cancer

Cancer is a generic term for a large group of diseases that can affect any part of the body. Other terms used are malignant tumours and neoplasms.

Cancer arises from a change in one single cell. The change may be started by external agents or inherited genetic factors.

A defining feature of cancer is the rapid creation of abnormal cells that grow beyond their usual boundaries, and which can then invade adjoining parts of the body and spread to other organs through the lymphatic system or bloodstream. The process whereby a disease spreads from one organ to another is referred to as metastasis. Metastases are the major cause of death from cancer.

There are over 200 different types of cancer. For example, the cells which make up the lungs can cause lung cancer. Furthermore, organs are made up of different types of cells, so there are different types of lung cancer.

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide and accounted for 7.6 million deaths (around 13 percent of all deaths) in 2008.

The main types of cancer are:
-lung (1.4 million deaths)

-stomach (740 000 deaths)

-liver (700 000 deaths)

-colorectal (610 000 deaths)

-breast (460 000 deaths).

Certain infections cause up to 20 percent of cancer deaths.

A significant proportion of cancers can be cured by surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy, especially if they are detected early. More than 30 percent of cancer deaths can be prevented.

Cancer arises from one single cell. The transformation from a normal cell into a tumour cell is a multistage process, typically a progression from a pre-cancerous lesion to malignant tumours. These changes are the result of the interaction between a person's genetic factors and three categories of external agents, including:

-physical carcinogens, such as ultraviolet and ionizing radiation;

-chemical carcinogens, such as asbestos, components of tobacco smoke, aflatoxin (a food contaminant) and arsenic (a drinking water contaminant); and

-biological carcinogens, such as infections from certain viruses, bacteria or parasites.

Ageing is another fundamental factor for the development of cancer. The incidence of cancer rises dramatically with age, most likely due to a build up of risks for specific cancers that increase with age. The overall risk accumulation is combined with the tendency for cellular repair mechanisms to be less effective as a person grows older.

Tobacco use, alcohol use, unhealthy diet, and chronic infections from hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and some types of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) are the leading risk factors for cancer. Cervical cancer, which is caused by HPV, is a leading cause of cancer death among women.

Some of the most common cancer types, such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, oral cancer and colorectal cancer have higher cure rates when detected early and treated according to best practices.

Some of the other cancer types, even though disseminated, such as leukemias and lymphomas in children, and testicular seminoma, have high cure rates if appropriate treatment is provided.

Western Medicine View

Western medicine attributes cancer to various factors including environmental, emotional, genetic, lifestyle, exposure to chemicals or radiation, and infections.

Cancer mortality can be reduced if cases are detected and treated early. Examples of screening methods are:

-visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) and PAP test for cervical cancer;

-mammography screening for breast cancer.

Treatments include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and psychosocial support that is aimed at curing the disease or considerably prolonging life while improving the patient's quality of life.

An important component of treatment is palliative care, that is, treatment to relieve, rather than cure, symptoms caused by cancer. Palliative care can help people live more comfortably. It is particularly needed when a patient is in advanced stage of cancer where there is little chance of cure.

Relief from physical, psychosocial and spiritual problems can be achieved in over 90 percent of advanced cancer patients through palliative care.

Chinese Medicine View

Cancer as a malignant tumour has been long recognized by Chinese Medicine. The earliest Chinese written record of a tumour was discovered in the oracle bones of Yin Dynasty in the 14th century B.C. and the Chinese word for cancer was first used in a Song Dynasty medical book in 1171.

According to the World Health Organisation, acupuncture has been shown to have a therapeutic effect on cancer pain* and according to Chinese Medicine theory, Chinese medicine is powerful at enhancing the body's own healing power and resistance to cancer cells. We have seen many patients undergoing cancer treatments and we are able to offer supportive treatments to improve symptoms such as anxiety, pain, poor appetite, sickness and general weakness as well as for hair loss caused by radiotherapy and for the fall in white blood cell counts caused by chemotherapy.

The length of a course of treatment depends on the severity and duration of the symptoms as well as on the patient's response. For side effects of radio or chemotherapy, it is better to start treatment prior to and to finish after the radio/chemotherapy course.

Chinese Medicine is not a substitute for conventional medicine. It is imperative that whilst seeking Chinese medical treatment, patients must continue with treatment prescribed by their GPs or consultants.

At AcuMedic clinics, senior consultants fully qualified in Chinese medicine and Western medicine from China offer supportive treatment for cancer patients.

Case History

'My treatment whilst undergoing chemotherapy for Breast Cancer was very beneficial. On one occasion my blood count (white blood cells) even increased on monthly blood tests taken at NHS Hospital. My hair did not fall out completely. More recently I found the herbs for my skin (dry and splitting) have helped restore it. I suffer from Cystitis and this is gradually being reduced. I must say, I have been helped enormously by Chinese medicine over the past 6 years.'

A man was suffering from constant dry cough for 10 months as a result of cancer in the left lung which required an operation that caused severe stress. Itchy throat; dry mouth; poor appetite and sleepiness were other symptoms. The doctor diagnosed a deficiency of cooling energy in the Lug, a stagnation of Qi in the Liver and a deficiency of Qi of the Heart. After 4 months of acupuncture and herbal treatments, the cough had almost disappeared.

'In February I was diagnosed with colon cancer and advanced tumours in my liver. Horrified I viewed the scans and saw that the tumours occupied about 70-80 percent of my liver area. The doctors tried sympathetically to tell me that it was an incurable condition, but chemotherapy would give me more time and they estimated the time I had left to be around two years. They also told me that the treatment did not always work in fact that this chemotherapy for this type of cancer was effective in only 60 percent of all cases.'

'I was not convinced (and desperate) and just because there was nothing more that they could do there was plenty that I could do. My diet was pretty good but I began to incorporate more foods high in anti-oxidants, meditate and have reiki.'

'After my first chemotherapy I felt dreadful and jumped at the chance of making an appointment with Dr. Lilly when she was recommended to me. Dr Lilly had treated other patients with similar conditions and had been successful. I was to be her next challenge. When I first saw her I could hardly walk, I was in pain, had lost too much weight and had no appetite and had hardly any energy, even basic chores like emptying the dishwasher were beyond me. She gave me acupuncture and prescribed an array of herbal formulas including the smelly ones that you have to boil up daily. I returned home exhausted and slept well for the first time in weeks.'

'The next morning I felt much better and gradually day by day my energy and appetite improved to the point where I could drive and do more than just lie on the sofa in front of the TV.'

'I felt nauseous a lot of the time before taking all the herbs but that diminished and I have rarely experienced many of the awful side effects that many suffer from while undergoing chemotherapy. Mainly I have to watch myself because most of the time I feel great and really positive but can overdo things and become tired if I do become too enthusiastic. Friends tell me I look great and most of the time and I feel optimistic most of the time.'

'After my third chemotherapy (out of a course of six) the doctors, impressed with my progress ordered a scan and the results were fantastic. The tumours had shrunk beyond all expectations (by more than 50 percent) and the consultant said that the results were not just good but 'very, very, very good'. Straight away he began to talk to me in a completely different way, that the tumours could clear up completely or that he expected them to shrink to a point where there were other treatments that they could consider or that I might be able to have more chemo. Most importantly he was talking to me in terms that suggested that I was in a position to make full recovery!!! (Remember that NHS doctors are very guarded in what they say to you in these sorts of circumstances and that chemotherapy is really expensive.)'

'Staying positive, it has been shown in many studies, is huge part of recovery from any disease but it is difficult when you feel pessimistic, dreadful, lethargic and constantly nauseous. So the Chinese herbal medicine is effective from all angles as it also has (I checked the formulas) cancer fighting ingredients and huge immune boosting properties. Boosting the immune system is vital to anyone on chemotherapy as it zaps the body?s own defence mechanisms making any patient susceptible to any infection so that even catching a cold can be life threatening. The other aspect is that the immune system then fights off the cancer itself. Some of the Chinese medicines and acupuncture help with sleep, digestion, maintaining appetite, are anti-depressant, de-toxing and cleansing and much much more and I know that works for me!!!!!.'

A woman came to AcuMedic Clinic shortly after finishing a course of chemotherapy for tongue cancer. In addition to serious stress and a very painful lump in the throat, the cancer was causing depression; insomnia; headaches; poor appetite; mouth ulcers; frequent urination at night, very dry mouth and cold temperature in the limbs. The Doctor recognised the symptoms as stagnation of blood and of Liver's Qi as well as a deficiency of the body's overall Qi and of Yin (the cooling bodily fluids). After 4 months of acupuncture and herbal treatment, the lump completely disappeared and the dryness in the mouth was significantly relieved. The patient was able to go back to work.

A woman had a lump in her left breast for 6 months and was diagnosed with breast cancer. Previously she suffered from a prolapse of the uterus and had been taking hormone replacement therapy. She was experiencing hot flushes; stress and anxiety; shortness of breath; poor appetite and frequent urination at night. The AcuMedic doctor identified a deficiency of the cooling energy in the Kidney and of the energy in the Spleen, as well as a stagnation of energy in the Liver. Appropriate acupuncture and herbal treatment were given and subsequently the patient's white and red blood cells count improved along with the results in other related tests. The patient started to feel significantly better while undergoing Western cancer treatment.

'I am a 63 year old male. In November 2009 I was diagnosed with head and neck cancer. I was told I had metastasis cancer which means the cancer had spread from the primary site, in my case from my tonsil to a lymph node in my neck. After having my tonsils removed I was given 3 lots of chemotherapy over 9 weeks, then 6 weeks of daily radiation therapy combined with another 6 weekly doses of chemotherapy every Monday.'

'Pre radiation therapy I was fitted with a PEG a tube directly into the stomach which enabled me to take liquid feed. By the third week of radiation therapy my mouth and throat became too painful to take anything but small sips of water so became totally dependent on the PEG. The therapy also left me with a dry mouth, (saliva glands not functioning), so I had to use artificial saliva in the form of sprays and gels. As you can imagine by the end of my treatment I was not feeling too great! Eight weeks after the end of my treatment I was still in a bad way. I was unable to swallow anything thicker than custard, and needed to take strong painkillers plus a mouth numbing gel so I could drink and clean my teeth. During this time I had absolutely no energy, sleeping all night and most of the day.'

'In April 2010 my daughter who had been successfully treated by Dr Lily for various ailments over the past five years suggested I made an appointment to see her. I was not convinced but made the appointment. I was given acupuncture and a month's supply of dry herbs. I then continued to see her on a monthly basis for further herbs and acupunctures. In the first month my mouth became much less painful, was no longer using the PEG and stopped taking painkillers. After three months my energy levels improved to the point that I was able to return to work part time, (I do a manual job). I am now able to eat most foods as long as they are not spicy or too dry. My saliva has partially returned so I no longer need to use sprays or gels.'

'Every month I attend an after care clinic where I am seen by an oncology team, I am given a medical check up and my progress monitored. Since following Dr Lily's course of treatment both the doctors and dietician have commented on my rapid rate of progress.'

'I also keep in touch with other head and neck cancer patients who at the same time as me underwent similar treatment. In comparing notes on how we are getting along I am recovering much faster. I now believe that most of this is due to the treatment of Dr Lily. I would recommend to anyone who has undergone radiation and or chemotherapy and are feeling the awful side effects to give Chinese medicine a chance.'

'Six years ago I was diagnosed as having prostrate cancer. I had visited my doctor because I seemed to be going to the toilet quite often during the night.'

'My doctor gave me a PSA blood test and it came out at 12.3. This is considered high as a first test and I was immediately sent to have a biopsy. The biopsy confirmed that I had a cancerous growth on the side of my prostrate. This is a dangerous location because it means the cancer can easily spread into the surrounding tissues and to other areas of the body. I then immediately had an MRA body scan. The results of the test showed that there are no visible signs of the cancer having spread. Having said that the specialists did say that it may have spread as our ?modern? imaging systems cannot pick up microscopic cancer cells starting their ?war? with whatever part of the body they have decided to attack, having left their comfortable home base of the prostrate gland.'

'Since the cancer was on the outside of my prostrate it was important to immediately take corrective action. There then followed a discussion between various specialists as to what would be the most suitable treatment in my case.'

'I have to say at this stage I was very scared as to what treatment I should embark on. Always remember that doctors are doctors because they enjoy practicing their trade on their patients. All the various specialists will say to you ?let me treat you?.'

'The options were:

1.Surgical removal of the prostrate.
This could possibly mean my being incontinent permanently.

2.Radio Therapy to burn out the cancer in the prostrate. This would mean it would not be possible to remove the prostrate at a later date if the cancer returned because the surrounding flesh is burnt and the healing process after the operation could be long and difficult leading to possibly serious incontinence.

3.Insert special pellets into the prostrate to kill off the cancerous cells over time did not actually become an option because it only works if the cancer is ?contained? within the prostrate. In my case as explained above it was on the edge of my prostrate'

'In the end it is the patient who has to decide. I plumped for option 2 (Radio Therapy to burn out the cancer in the prostrate). I therefore had a treatment programme that lasted for thirty days with 30 second ?shots? at the three critical cancer areas each working day. This left me seriously debilitated and exhausted. It was necessary to rest in bed after the treatment as it dragged down my whole energy levels.'

'Having completed the radio therapy course I then had another PSA test and the results were a PSA rating of around 0.5. Effectively the cancer had been stopped in its tracks. My energy levels continued to be very low however and I was very lethargic. It was then that I was recommended to Acumedic and I went to see Dr Lily.'

'For me Chinese medicine conjured up the concept of the body being a pinball with dozens of needles sunk into the body with no discernable results. How wrong I was. Dr Dr Lily explains how Chinese doctors over the millenniums have discovered how the human body functions. We all maintain our health by a fine balance of the key bodily organs; heart, liver, kidneys, blood circulation etc. All should be functioning in unison/balance or in Chinese parlance Ying and Yang.'

'Dr Lily initially assesses the overall balance of ones body by feeling the pulse. I never knew that taking ones pulse informed her of not just the function of the heart but also the kidneys and liver. The tongue is also one of the most important bodily surfaces and gives up a host of possible telltale problems. Having assessed me initially Dr Lily diagnosed a severe weakness in my kidneys and liver function largely attributing to my lack of energy and being generally run down.'

'I embarked on a series of monthly visits to Dr Lily. On each occasion I had an acupuncture session over parts of my body relevant to my ailment. After the first treatment I was totally exhausted. It was if the needles released stress or pressure on parts of my body to address the imbalance caused by the draconian radio therapy treatment. I was also instructed by Dr Lily to drink green tea regularly. It has become a daily habit over all these years. In my business I travel extensively to the Middle East and therefore I was put on a continuous course of herbal pills which are easy to carry. The herbal pills, defined by numbers, endeavour to restore the balance back in the body.'

'Gradually over several months, by regular visits and disciplining myself to follow the regime prescribed by Dr Lily, my levels of energy returned. Today I feel no different than before my Radio Therapy treatment. My sex life is unfortunately impaired but I am not incontinent in any way.'

'Since taking green tea I have not had a single bout of flue or any colds. I am convinced that the regular sessions I have had with Dr Lily over the past 6 years have been of inestimable value to me and my general well being. One of the most important aspects for all new patients embarking on a program of Chinese medicine is not to expect immediate results. We take an aspirin to cure a headache more or less immediately. It is a powerful drug. There are no powerful drugs in Chinese medicine. There are hundreds of subtle herbs which you are required to infuse into your body regularly over many months. Gradually, imperceptibly, your body reacts to the herbs and responds positively.'

'Chinese medicine works in symbiosis with Western medicine. For example once a patient has a cancer then aggressive surgery, chemo or radio therapy can in some cases eliminate the cancer or at least curtail its aggressive path of destruction. Thereafter to bring the body back from the stresses incurred by the treatment, regular therapeutic Chinese medicinal solutions gradually restore the body to its normal functions. Of course not everyone can be cured. However from my limited experience the six years of constant treatment by Dr Lily has I believe stabilised my body. Whilst my PSA has risen marginally, as far as my Western doctors are concerned, the cancer has not spread to other parts of my body, despite the fact the initial location of the cancer was in a critical area of my body.'

'I am confident that by maintaining my ?balance? of health, with the continuing use of Chinese medicine, I can reduce the risk of the return of my aggressive cancer. As my Western Doctor says 'Once you have it you can never get rid of it' However you can try to forestall its growth. Thank you Acumedic and Dr Lily for all your continuing help.'

'Ms. V.H discovered a lump in her left breast, and was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly afterwards - receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy. During her conventional treatment, Ms. V.H visited the AcuMedic centre, she was worried about her white blood cells being low, and was given specific herbal treatment and acupuncture to nourish the blood. When she was having her blood tested at the hospital that was administering the chemotherapy and radiotherapy, she was surprised to learn that her white blood cells had stabilised. She attributes this to the herbs and acupuncture she was prescribed. Now almost a year since finishing her conventional treatment, Ms. V.H claims she is almost 100 percent better and intends to continue the herbal and acupuncture therapy.'

'I believe Chinese Medicine has helped me greatly over the years, but especially since I was diagnosed with breast cancer. When undergoing chemotherapy, I'm sure it helped keep my white cell count up, so that I never had to miss a treatment. And since finishing cancer treatment Chinese medicine has helped me get back my energy and get through the menopause without too much discomfort.'

'A regular smear test revealed that I was suffering from severe dyskariosis. From what I was told and from my own research on the internet, I understand that this disease is caused by the Human Papillona Virus, which is sexually transmissible, and can degenerate into cervix cancer, especially when it is already advanced.'

'It seems that my immune system had not fought the disease, which had therefore developed to a stage when it becomes difficult for any immune system to fight back. A severe dyskariosis does not disappear ?on its own?. I repeated the smear test and the unfortunate result was confirmed. I visited Dr Lily for the first time in mid-December, for a combinations of reasons, which, to summarise, amount to bad overall health. At the same time, I stopped having unprotected sexual intercourse. On 16 January the next year, I repeated the smear test one last time. The disease had become moderate rather than severe. During January, I found myself crying a lot and I believe that Chinese tea was helping me release a lot of emotional tension, which I view as very positive.'

'In February, I had a colposcopy, by which the gynecologist cut out a little piece of flesh from my cervix and gave it to the lab for a biopsy (analysis) to be performed. In March, the biopsy?s result indicated that 'no further action was needed' -- ie the disease had receded to a point where not even the laser treatment was needed.'

'In the interim period I visited Dr Lily on several occasions: in mid-February, in mid-March and again today 16 April. We both have noticed that my overall health has improved. In particular, I sleep better and manage to go to the loo regularly, neither of which was the case before. (I hope this improvement is here to stay!!) The white coating on my tongue has more or less disappeared, simply by drinking the tea and eating more meat. I also decided to stop drinking alcohol completely from 25 Feb to 11 April (Lent).'

'I have found which exercise in the gym suits me best to accompany your treatment. Slowly, I have been able to move my lower back, which was more or less completely stuck before, making me unable to move my hips and pelvis (since more or less Dec and Jan). This newly found flexibility is a great relief.'

'In the meantime, we have found that acupuncture in the back (rather than the front) of my body does provide welcome temporary relief. Relief is felt also in my eyes. The removal of the white coating from my tongue exposes a purple tongue, which is my real problem, has been there for a very long time and is the result of my very sad childhood. I am now following a psychological treatment, the progress of which matches those of my treatment by Chinese medicine.'

'It was from April I started to feel always tired, no much appetite, lost 10 kilos within three months. At that time I was living with my daughter to look after her as she just had a big operation. She noticed me wearing lots of clothes all the time as I felt cold. Her suspicion on my health pushed me to see my GP immediately. I?ve been given a series of examinations in hospital which I didn?t think much about. Not long afterwards while I was having a walk with my daughter in the park I received a phone call from my GP but he asked for my daughter instead. I was diagnosed with non-hodgkin?s lymphoma aged 79. The tumor grew to the size of an orange.'

'I soon started my chemotherapy treatment for the following whole year. The side-effects made me vomiting, fatigue, having sleeping problems. Finally a friend of mine referred me to AcuMedic. I was booked with Dr Lily, a specialist in dealing with side-effects due to chemo and radiotherapy. After having acupuncture and taking herbs, my condition was much improved. My blood tests before each course turned out all normal. I believe Chinese medicine definitely helped me.'

'After half a year of chemotherapy I suddenly started to suffer from the herpes zoster. My face looked like an alien. Dr Lily was able to combine the two treatments together using only herbs, tonics and acupuncture which helped it to clear within a week. Meanwhile I could continue with my chemotherapy and completed the whole run of it after a year. So far I have gone through four MRI scans and results are all normal. The regular follow-up examinations showed I?ve been cleared for five years now.'

'I have never expected Chinese medicine to help me in this special way to cope with my cancer treatment. I would recommend anyone who is undergoing the similar experience to complement your treatment with Chinese medicine. It can not only reduce the side-effects caused by western medicine but help to increase and lengthen your chance of survival. I myself is the live example.'

'No better words can express my gratitude to Dr Lily and AcuMedic. They give me a second life.'

'I first met Dr Lily after my breast cancer diagnosis. It was 3 weeks before my mastectomy. I was skinny, looked gaunt and didn?t eat well. In weeks before my operation I gained three kilos as I started to take the herbal remedies. I also felt stronger and more energetic. When I was in hospital I kept taking the herbs and recovered quicker than another woman my age. I was up walking on the second day and had a shower on the 3rd day without help. In the hospital they did not want me to take the herbal remedies, but after they has been checked out at the hospital?s pharmacy they came back and said it?s absolutely fine for me to take them.'

'I started IVF treatment eight days after my operation to harvest eggs before chemotherapy. Despite the recent trauma to my body I produced nine eggs which were good to freeze.'

'I proceeded to have six strong cycles of chemo-therapy, which I?ve been told by my doctor I tolerated better than peers my age. For the first three months I kept much normality of life and managed to keep quite active. I even had to face a separation from my partner and moving home during my treatment and managed to cope. Thanks to okey energy levels and general physical health which I believe affected my mental wellbeing positively and I?m sure the treatment and remedies I get from Dr Lily at AcuMedic Centre has helped hugely with this.'
