Great Taste is the world’s largest blind-tasted food awards judged by over 400 of the most demanding palates. When a product wears a Great Taste label it carries a badge of honour but more importantly, the Great Taste logo is a signpost to a wonderful tasting product – and hundreds of judges have worked hard to discover the very best through hours and hours of blind-tasting a total of 10,000 different foods and drink.
Out of the 10,000 entries to the awards less than 25% have received a star and less than 3% have received a 2 star - we have 6 teas that have received a 1 star and 2 teas that have received a 2 star.
Our award winning teas are:
AMBER MOUNTAIN - A rare yellow single estate tea from Anhui province in China which is prepared by a special technique known as 'moist heating'. This mellows the tea and reduces the grassy elements of the leaf to make for a sweeter and smoother brew.
WHITE BLOSSOM - An enticing combination of Jasmine Silver Needles from Fuding and Yellow Chrysanthemum flowers from Zhejiang in China. A fragrant combination which the Great Taste judges remarked had a 'gentle smokiness on the nose and well managed flavour in the Chrysanthemum'.
RUBY GABA OOLONG - An exclusive Taiwanese oolong made from the unusual Ruby Cultivar and allowed to oxidise in nitrogen for 36 hours to radically increase its GABA content - a soothing and anti-stress neurotransmitter found naturally in the body which can improve concentration and creative thought. The judges remarked that the tea was bright and clear in the cup with pleasing caramel and peppery notes'.
SUPERIOR IRON GODDESS - A supreme quality Tie Guan Yin from Anxi province with sweet honeysuckle aroma and a creamy and long finish. The judges raved that the tea 'displayed delicate Oolong characteristics with excellent clean flavours working on lots of levels'.
FROZEN SUMMIT OOLONG - A wonderful Dong Ding Oolong made from high quality tea leaves from Alishan. Lovely deep roasted oolong prepared in the traditional way. The judges said that it has a 'creamy mouthfeel and combines a slight nuttiness with delicate peachy characteristics'.
RUBY BLACK - A very unusual Taiwanese black tea with incredible menthol notes. The judges agreed that this is a 'good quality twisted black leaf with an almost manuka antiseptic note whichis very interesting'.
SILK OOLONG - A Jin Xuan cultivar Oolong which is a best selling chinalife tea. The judges said that the tea had ' an impression of caramelised or condensed milk but edged with sourness and then sweetness on the finish'.
IMPERIAL GREEN - Our most revered single estate Long Jing green tea from Lions Head plantation. The judges remarked that the tea is a 'nicely pressed leaf with mellow golden liquor and a delicate Spring character which is lively and bright'.
We would like to thank the Guild of Fine Food for their awards and we plan on entering a few more teas to the next judging. We hope that everyone will have an opportunity to try our 66 brews but these 8 are a guaranteed good place to start!
