One of China's most revered and highly sought after teas is Da Hong Pao, also known as Empress Oolong, Rock Oolong, Wuyi Oolong and Big Red Robe Oolong. This tea is grown in the beautiful Wuyi mountains of Fujian Province, a nine peak mountain with vast rocky fingers pointing to the sky. The mineral rich, fast draining terrain make it the only place to grow true Empress Oolong.

This is made from the Qi Dan variety which was propagated throughout Wuyi from the original Da Hong Pao trees in the 1980's.

chinalife STAFF PICK: Hugo - Empress Oolong

"With oaked red wine, and roasted peach notes, Empress Oolong is the tea that I easily compare to an exquisite full course meal.

It reminds me of the traditional Madeira wine, served as an aperitif, transforming into some Madeira style roasted ribs that finally brings me to the island's traditional confectionery.

Known also as Da Hong Pao, Empress Oolong is famous for preventing weight gain."
