One independent tea shop is up against a conglomerate of 1,000+ shops of Camden Market and the £millions of its owner for the award of 'Best Shop in Camden'. Who wins? You decide.
12 months ago chinalife was the Runner-Up in the Best Shop in Camden category of TimeOut's LoveLondon Awards. We were all chuffed, of course.
This year, we're nominated once again. We thought: 'Now let's have a go and win this!'
But then we saw the other nominees in our category...
Again, we're up against the entire Camden Market (they won it last year).
What? Camden Market as the best shop?
Can anyone honestly call Camden Market 'a shop'?
Putting chinalife and Camden Market in the same Best Shop category is like putting an indie bookshop against Amazon!
Like David and Goliath.
Or actually, 'David' and gazillions of cash.
Teddy Sagi snapped up Camden Market Holdings which includes Stables Market and Camden Lock Village for £400 million. In 2014 he captured the adjacent Camden Lock and Buck Street for £70-90 million. He now owns 4 of the six sections of the Market. Teddy’s next plan is to redevelop Camden Market by using £300 million.
In a world of property investors who want to own entire regions of historical London, small, independent businesses are a valuable counterpoint to maintain the character of London.
We dislike the valuing of big brands and franchise chains above the passion and originality of small businesses. And now that Camden Market is a “highly strategic property acquisition”, it will get even bigger. But it will never be a 'shop'.
If you agree then please vote for us and let’s try to topple this Goliath!
As a family-run business, chinalife is independent of foreign investment. Our roots go back, via the pioneering AcuMedic Clinic, to 1972. Instead of building a retail chain, our focus has always been on building a unique haven where you can get tea high on a remarkable selection of the finest loose leaf from the East Asian mountains.
As a result, chinalife has put Camden on the world map of tea shopping.
Sure we're independent, but we can't do it without our customers. And with the amazing customers we've got, anything is possible.
The Camden Market deserves many accolades BUT not best shop so let's go one better and win it this time. Please share and vote for us!
